Once a tooth is lost or extracted, the tooth socket becomes filled with bone and the gum tissue will change its shape as a result. The process will take a few months until a stable shape is achieved. A conventional denture can be made after this process.

The process of creating dentures starts with a series of molds or impressions taken from the oral tissues. These impressions are sent to a dental lab to create models of the mouth and to create dentures. These are then transferred into the patient’s mouth step by step. While they are being introduced, a lot of things have to be taken into consideration. For instance, the dentists have to think about the proper bite, a good fit and the right appearance. A patient who required dentures will have to meet with their dentist at least once a week until the denture is completely installed. Then, they will have to schedule occasional visit to make adjustments within the first month.

Immediate dentures are also an option and are given to the patient on the same day in which the teeth are extracted or lost. However, these don’t really fit the gum tissue and the bone as well as a custom designed denture. Therefore, they will have to be adjusted during the healing process. Immediate dentures are considered to be a good temporary option until a conventional denture becomes available.

Bridges and dental implants are two alternatives available for those who don’t wish for dentures. Bridges are designed to replace the missing teeth by placing crowns in the space and attaching a fake tooth to it. Depending on the location of the lost teeth, bridges are only capable of replacing about two to three missing teeth if they are in a row. These are cemented into place and are permanent. Implants are metal posts that are fitted to the jaw bone. A crown can be attached to a metal post in order to replace a single tooth. Multiple lost teeth will require multiple posts. These are a costly tooth replacement option but will appear natural.
